Oregon 2005 Dec Diane's visit

DECEMBER 2005:
From: Diane
Oregon Dec 2 "Happy Birthday Carol!!! It was fun calling you for your birthday with Mom & Dad. At first Dad thought it would be too hard on Mom but he happily changed his opinion when Mom enjoyed talking to you on the phone.....even though she said you were my Mother at one point!! Mom sang “Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me” with a big smile on her face. Mom asked Carol which one she was (or something like that). Carol answered “the cute one”! Excellent response!! Mom was funny holding the cell phone in her lap and trying to press buttons to start talking.....amazing we didn't get disconnected!! Dad & I are going back to Royale Gardens to visit Mom tomorrow afternoon and we'll call Mary for her birthday! We'll also double check on how to receive incoming phone calls.
It was difficult for me to walk into the nursing home to visit Mom. Dad knew Mom's room was A15 and the wing was on the right side but it was the left side. Mom was sitting in the hall with two other ladies. She lights up when she sees Dad and asks if she can come home now. Dad tells her Dr. Selinger says she needs to stay until she gets better. I hear we blame everything on Dr. Selinger to keep Mom's peace with us. Mom ignored me for the first 15 minutes and that, of course, was okay. Mom looks well but small and a bit slumped in her wheelchair. Her calves have two nasty gashes and bruises from her fall a few weeks ago but are healing nicely and are not swollen. It's a bit heart wrenching when she's struggling to make sense of things but there was no drama, nor tears. Mom read a story (from Dad) about an Irish nursing home which adding a pub (stopped inhabitants from boredom and drew more visitors!). Mom's reading ability is definitely declining. Dad went to show Robin the story and talk to the staff about Mom. Mom & I did leg lifts for some exercise. Mom & I walked around the front lobby and then meandered to her room. Her room is spacious (thanks Margaret for getting the unused 3rd bed out of there) and her bed and chair have a great view out the window. Mom called it home since her pictures are up on the wall but didn't want to get out of her wheelchair. I sat on the bed twice and set off the alarm! CNA Fawn was quick to respond and friendly with Mom. We stayed visiting for 1 1/2 hours! It was difficult to leave but we assured Mom we'd be back the next day (Dad's idea). We took Mom to the TV lounge for distraction but it wasn't very effective. Fawn took Mom for some juice and we left. The rest of my visit.....
Susan and cute Kittiara picked me up at the airport. We made a few stops and enjoyed homemade cream of broccoli soup back at Rogue River. After a nap, I greeted Dad, unpacked, cooked supper and settled into Dad's routine.
The Northwest Club had all but one treadmill occupied this morning. I walked next to Doris whose husband retired from Foster Farms after 37 years and they lived in Livingston! Small world!!! She's also a Red Hatter like I am, so I'm joining her group and will be on the eighth float of Grant's Pass's Christmas parade tomorrow evening! We'll be dressed as presents!! I'll probably go to their Dec 10 Christmas party since I'll be missing my Chatty Red Hat group's party.
This evening I returned to Northwest and met Julia in the warm pool -- an author and mother of six. She's planning on moving to Washington next July and will have a house available in Rogue River in the correct price range. I'll go take a look at it this week. (one acre of land, garden, fruit trees, 2600 sq ft home, core built in the late 1800s.)
Dad & I enjoyed tofu & eggs and yogurt pancakes for breakfast. Thanks for the recipes Mary! We went to the bank, vitamin store, gooseberries (new organic type store) for major grocery shopping and smoothie, wheat grass and muffin in the dining area. After putting away groceries, we visited Mom. Dad's energy level has greatly improved since I was last here. His humor is still intact and refreshing. His control issues are not as intense since he's feeling better. Amazingly, he's been turning on the heat during the day!! After visiting Mom, he actually turned it up to 69 from 67! I'm thrilled since Tom told me the house was 57 degrees one day when I called!
Sleepy time.....

Oregon Dec 3 & 4 "Info about Mom:
Saturday Dad & I found Mom sitting alone in her room looking out the window and calling (softly without any demand) “Margaret”. Margaret says Mom doesn't remember that she lived at Margaret's for the last six months but her routine seems to be changed -- used to call “Tom” when she wanted something (even though we would be sitting right next to her). We called Mary for her birthday but were interrupted by a deaf/NOISEY neighbor so went to the fireplace. Mom seemed to just hold the phone for a long time but Mary hung in there until we settled down and started talking again. Good old cell phones. Mom enjoyed eating some goodies Danny sent from shopping at a great store -- Trader Joes. We'll bring a baggie or two every visit. Mom drilled Dad for a short time. He closed his eyes and 'took a nap' while she asked me how his eyes REALLY were. I told her the facts - one eye sees clearly but has tunnel vision, the other eye has some side vision but is blurry. Grateful the surgeries have stopped anymore glaucoma damage and Dad can read again but not drive except to the gym and store (VERY close by). We joined others in the dining room to 'sing along with Chuck' -- Christmas Carols. I got teary eyed on Silent Night (sleep in heavenly peace). Mom took turns singing and napping. She told me she liked being around other seniors and the kids went to the house across the street. She looked for tissues up her sleeves but their weren't any, she didn't ask for them and I wonder how she gets some needs met when she can't express them. She had a nice Christmas sweater on and her hair was combed as usual. The cut on her leg looks nasty but healing. Her legs were not swollen (visitors should always check). After 45 minutes of singing we went back to the A wing 'for some juice' and left.
Today (Sunday's) visit was not as pleasant. The CNA got Mom out of the TV room. Mom was in a very irritated mood and we couldn't distract her much. Reminds me of sundowner syndrome times. I arrived with my parade costume (dressed as a Christmas present) which brought a smile for a minute or two, took some pictures, sang all the sibling songs and Mom kept going back to asking questions. What did you do today? Dad said - went to church. Mom wines “and why didn't you take me?” Whatever we said, she complained about being lonely and needing someone to be with her. She believes she's been waiting for days. We started a visitor book and wrote a note about each day we were there and a list of previous visitors. Pass the word to continue the journal so we can show her that she's not always alone. We went to Mom's room to look at the puzzle that I repaired and put cough drops in her drawer. She said she had to go to the bathroom. As aides started to help her, Dad and I walked out without saying goodbye.
Tomorrow, Dad will get some exercise and I'll meet Helen at Royale Garden and learn more what to do during visits. There's also an unwritten list for me/Mary to do......decorate Mom's room, bring videos to watch? (let them keep or we take each time?), get Mom to crotchet even if crooked?, participate in her physical therapy because she won't use her legs anymore(requested by therapist), Christmas presents for helpers (all, special ones, cleaning lady)?, copy (or buy) “God's Little Instructions” off bathroom wall in second hall on right, find out what Mom's schedule is, activities director is separate for A wing -- where's a schedule?, separate Christmas party -- Mom going to both? -- sign up and get presents, where's rose garden, how get tea, who are friends to talk to Mom?, better on G wing maybe in future? (stay put for now per Dad -- too confusing to keep changing).
I wrote some more but lost it before it saved....bummer.....sleepy time....
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO Bill(y) Chirrick, Colleen Pepper, Justin Robertson!!!! What a great day!!!!
From: Tom
Diane, thanks for all you do.
Yes,it is good to visit..and some of the visits will not be so pleasant.
I think the visitor’s book is great!! Dating each visit.
The rose garden is to the left. Go straight into the place, past the reception area. Straight (12 o’clock) past the main dining and meal prep area, There are various doors on the left hich go out to rose garden. It is precious space, Enjoy. Tom

Oregon Dec 5 "Happy Birthday to Bill (my son), Colleen and Justin!!! It was grand, as usual, talking to my son. He was getting ready to give Camilla a bath. Sherry also called this morning and her whole class sang Happy Birthday to him. Maria works in the mornings and Bill works a 2pm - 10pm-ish shift.
I started my morning with a great workout at the Northwest Club. Every treadmill was occupied so used the weight machines first. The woman's gym was the most crowded I've ever seen but we had some great conversations.
I stopped at Ray's (previously Market of Choice grocery store) and spent about $60 for Dad. I was heading to Dad's (driving by the cemetery) when Susan called me and said she just left Dad's. What timing! She had a refreshing time in Portland and enjoyed a shopping weekend with the girls. It's so good to get out of town and do something purely for the fun of it.
Last night I ground carrots, broccoli and Costco chicken (1/3 dark meat, 2/3 white meat) for Dad. This is the first time for the chicken and he loves the flavor and texture (couldn't eat before being ground). Margaret -- he also is enjoying Heather's Ezchele (sp?) cinnamon raisin bread. He said he always likes cinnamon (even with soup, fish, whatever!). After shopping today, I made him the squash/potato/carrot soup and a veggie/black bean/barley soup for me.
Dad has had two computer lessons so far. It didn't seem to phase him to click start in order to turn off the computer. My hubby thinks it's totally ridiculous and it does sound funny. The second lesson was turning on the computer and opening word perfect. He started typing and said “I think I'm going to like this!!!” as he learned when to backspace, use the arrow keys and use the delete keys to fix mistakes.
Outside Royale Gardens this afternoon, I walked to Mom's window and peaked in. Her face lit up when she saw me and she waved for me to come in. She was sitting in her room holding hands with Marie McAlister -- a soft spoken fellow A wing resident. Judy is the loud one that treasures an amazingly coherent short chat and then goes back to hollering 'help'. Mom wanted to go to the bathroom so Elizabeth (CNA) and Lindsey (helper) took care of a panicking Mom who wanted to go but didn't want to get off the wheelchair. She is petrified of falling so they don't even let her try to put her feet on the ground and just do a two person lift to a portable pot while quietly assuring her that she is safe, they have a good hold of her, etc. They let her sit there as long as she likes with one of them always in the room. When she's done, the helper opens the door a crack to get the second person to lift Mom off the pot and put her back in the wheelchair. Mom is scared and hollering most of the time she's being helped up and down. It was difficult to watch, stay detached enough not to show a reaction, and reassure Mom that she was in good arms and all was well.
Helen arrived and we meandered to the rose garden (if the nurse's station wasn't in the lobby, the rose garden is down the hallway straight across from the front door). After a few offices, the first dining room has a kitchen that you can request tea from Colleen or whoever, the second dining room has doors to the left to the rose garden and a 'help yourself' kitchenette with coffee, green cups in drawer, microwave to boil tea water, dirty dishes into left cabinets, tea bags above microwave area I think. After a short sitting area, there is the R wing where Mom used to be. Rehabilitation therapy is to the left on the R wing. Mom's former roommate Marion (on oxygen, hand in cast, bulging eyes) is in room R17 and loves a visit from Mom. Adah is in R4, bed 3 (the short line of the L shaped room) with wavy hair that Mom always admires. Also talked to Judy who has a colorful crocheted lap blanket that Mom admires. After watching some playful dogs in the rose garden and picking a rose for noisy, grateful Judy we 'hung out' in the dining rooms visiting with other residents.
Everyone seems to know friendly Helen and I treasure what she does with Mom. I met Carol Greyber (the head of Royale Gardens who used to have a child in Margaret/Helen's school -- I think). We talked to Kari twice -- the friendly, heavy set head nurse -- who hoped that Mom would walk again if we could get her past her fear of falling. Kari says Mom asks for Tom a hundred times a day and would love some input on how to explain why he can't be there all the time. She understands why. Kari says Mom has some dementia problems but is one of her more alert residents. Mom has good reason to fear it since she's fallen four times since being there and Kari is protecting Mom as much as possible now. Mom is strapped into the wheel chair and is comfortable with the security it gives her. Mom's bed is low to the ground with a mat next to the bed and has an alarm for falling. Mom doesn't even want to put her feet on the floor when we lift the foot rests of the wheel chair.
Mom did ask her normal range of questions but was in a much better mood then yesterday. Early in the visit she said she was getting used to this place and later she said she liked this place. Near the end of the 2 1/2 hr visit Mom wanted to go potty again and Helen wanted to try getting her to stand since there was two of us. We gave Mom lots of reassurance and time as she scooted to the front of her wheelchair petrified of the 'slippery' floor even with her new no-slip shoes, not wanting us to touch her at all, stood up for two seconds leaning on her old walker (locked so she felt more secure) while I held her back forward, but then she started sitting back down screeching that she was falling. Once she was sitting again she calms down. Elizabeth (CNA with rotten teeth) and Lindsey (blond smiling helper) came to help Mom and Helen & I quietly left.
Robin's office is before the first dining room and she came out to say hi to us. Robin had Mom playing bingo today. Mom lasted for one game of the five that are played. Robin challenges her to stay for two games next time. Helen reminded Mom of the bowling game they played in the dining room last week. I'm going to be there tomorrow for 9am exercise in the parlor (first door on right after the front door -- also used as chapel and singing room). Routine? Most of them are in bed around 7pm. Wake up time is between 6:30 and 7 am. The A wing currently has 17 patients and can go up to 20 patients (but never adding more then one at a time). Day time staff consists of 1 shower aide, 2 CNA’s and 2 wing assistants (helpers). At night time, there are two less.
enough for now.....

Diane, love the way that you are getting to know the community at the Royale Garden...
They are all so much a part of the care giving now. Grateful for all of them. Thanks for your visits and helps to Mother. I too hope she can walk again. Tried to get her to try it on the carpet... But I guess 4 falls would frighten me too!
Nice to hear how you set limits... and find the benefits/rose garden/tea set up etc in the Center. Marion has a daughter who lives in RR. She is very realistic...
Nice to hear of the family connections. Sherry and her class/ Bill and his young family.
Enjoy the club... take care,

Oregon Dec 6, 2005 8:45AM - I pulled into the second driveway and parked where Mom could see me if she was watching. She didn't see me today but she was sitting in the TV room still in her nightgown with her red blanket on her shoulders. She was quietly trying to figure out how to get the pad out between her legs. She was sitting on it so it was impossible to get out. She knew that's what she slept on and it is soft. She was warm even though her legs were exposed. Today is shower day (twice a week) and Mom was next. They shower residents pretty much in the order they wake up. I followed Amanda & Amanda back to Mom's room because Mom asked if I could come with her. The shower gal was Desiree. She has a hernia so can't lift anyone but is very chatty, from San Diego, and sparkles as she talks about cars, the beach, whatever. She loved hearing that Mom enjoyed her shower (I asked) because she knows the shower scares most dementia patients and she doesn't get allot of positive feedback. The helpers have a fast and efficient way of getting Mom dressed.
Patsy is Tuesday only RN. She hugged Mom and told her 'I love you'. Patsy is a single Mom picking up an extra shift to put two kids through college. She started in mental health and love the A wing.
We missed exercise time but joined in the Heritage club (thanks Robin for coming to get Mom since it started early) which was someone reading stories that encouraged residents to share (Lawrence Welk, first TV's, uses of scotch tape, etc). Mom napped through part of it.
Sheri CNA found Mom & I in the parlor to take Mom's vitals. Sheri has a cast on her foot since she broke her ankle four months ago. It's not healing and she might need surgery. She's normally only on A wing but helps all over since she's on light duty. Mom's vitals: temp 97.4, pulse 86, blood pressure 129/78, respiration 17.
I gave Mom back her taped Mother's ring and she likes having something on her fingers again. Margaret do you have a two toned leaf ring? Mom said she found it on the ground by your house. I have the ring now and guess it belongs to one of the other residents. No wonder they want everything marked with a name!!
Mom does need to sign up for a prescription plan and we'll let Royale Gardens choose for us since there is no financial impact to us even if Mom was taking medicines now. Interesting....Medicare/Medicaid (dual coverage) people can change their plans every 30 days. Medicare only people can only change once a year.
While Mom was going to the bathroom, I tracked down Mom's restorative person -- Kristi Roger CNA/RA, MA. Kristi works with Mom every weekday in her room (not the 'gym') doing range of motion exercises. The muscles behind Mom's knees are SO contracted that Mom is physically NOT capable of standing up now even if she wanted to. Kristi showed me how she's gently stretching them (one hand on knee, other on ankle, gentle, gentle pressure to extend leg). Kristi is impressed with how Mom is willing to exercise compared to others. I asked if a lower wheelchair would help so Mom could put her feet on the ground and 'walk' around. Kristi said Mom's feet on the foot rests was better because her feet were extended a bit forward. If she was wheelchair walking, her feet would be pushing back which exercises the front of the leg and further contracts the back of the leg/knee which we are trying to avoid. So Mom is definitely wheel chair bound for now. Kristi did like the idea of playing the chair aerobics tape and expects that others would join us. Dad wants to bring the tape back and forth because he might need it someday! Does anyone copy tape to tape?
Heather, the sweet activities director for A wing, took Mom to the big dining room for lunch and I left. Mom usually eats lunch with the other wings because she can feed herself. Heater said she had to encourage Mom to eat sometimes! Her appetite is changing!
Yesterday I had a good visit with Mom but cried (with Helen) after I left. Today was a good visit also and I felt good deep inside that Mom is in a good place and she'll be as well as she can be.
Dad slept in today so I was able to make him breakfast at 12:30am! After tofu eggs with mozzarella cheese and yogurt pancakes, we picked up his new prescription bifocals. He likes the better vision the glasses provides and will take some time to adjust. We walked around Rite Aid & Staples picking up presents for Royale Garden's Christmas parties and odds and ends. Then we enjoyed a leisurely lunch & shopping at the new Gooseberries. Dad liked Spankopia (Greek lasagna - filo dough, spinach, feta cheese, etc), veggie juice, wheat grass and a lemon/poppy seed muffin. I tasted many strange salads and enjoyed a tempeh salad, and chili shrimp salad. Within a half hour of getting home, Dad asked for a smoothie! We both enjoyed one (from Mary's great recipe -- Dad doesn't want any other smoothies anymore). I went back to visit Mom while Dad later ate soup and salmon. (p.s. At 9pm I made him another smoothie! What metabolism!!)
This evening I found Mom eating in the TV room with two other ladies. The majority of the residents were in the dining room. Maybe these three are more loners (Agnes, Sue & Lorraine). Sue seemed pretty coherent but smiling Lorraine didn't even know her own name. Mom was eating Sue's pea salad with Sue's fork! Mom didn't remember that I was there all morning and wanted to go to the bathroom. Elizabeth (CNA with rotten teeth) told me to keep an eye on Mom's food! Ownership to dementia patients has a different meaning -- whether it's rings, clothes, glasses or food! I tried playing the 50th anniversary video but couldn't get the VCR to play even though I did put Showboat in this morning. Mom was happy to hear about Dad's activities and glasses. She asks questions but not intensely....maybe I'm learning the correct responses again to minimize agitation but satisfy the comment/question. We went to the big dining room for a cup of tea. A male resident wheeled over to the piano and played very nicely. He then came to tell Mom & I what song he sang....and sang it to us.
Mom seemed to think I should get home before it's too late so I prepared to go. I left her sitting next to Marie (haven't heard that lady talk yet though). I heard Mom asking “Did my husband just leave?”. No one answered. A minute lately Mom asked “Where's my daughter that came in here with me?”. I walked back in and she admired HER coat & hat on ME and I thanked her for sharing so nicely. We went to Mom's room and tried to read a book (reading skills are hit and miss). I found Mom's necklace in her crotchet bag and will get her name engraved on the back. Elizabeth heard me attempting to leave and distracted Mom looking at her small Christmas tree. From now on I'll stick with quietly walking away instead of saying goodbye. I still felt good about Mom being there. I'm glad I've seen morning, noon and evening routines now and have changed my dread of visiting into something to look forward to.....for today anyway!
Dad went to bed an hour ago. Told me to say my prayers. Sounds like a good idea! Good night! p.s. Dad puts his socks in the dryer for a few minutes so he has warm socks as he gets into bed!

Diane, I appreciate your writing. Especially your own experiences and what is challenging...and what is satisfying.
Not sure I would agree with the therapist about a shorter wheel chair. I think...it would at least get mother to move her legs... So, I would recommend it... Anyway, that is my 2 cents.
thanks for all you do... nice to hear that you are getting to the gym. I managed to go there or to the Y everyday I was in town... lost 4 lbs in my 2 weeks..
Enjoy the beauty of the season. peace, Tom

Diane, it is good to here of your time with the folks.
Please excuse my wheelchair comments. I need to accept that that is the way things are.
Have a good evening. Easy does it. Tom

Oregon Dec 7, 2005
Good news -- My dear 'baby' sister Kathy will become a Grandma again in a short time!! She received THE phone that Shelia was in labor about 2AM so Kathy is on her way to Portland. All our prayers and best wishes go with her and Shelby to take to Shelia, Dan & Joey.
Kathy, Shelby & I spent ten hours together (from noon to 10 PM) yesterday Dec 7 for a pediatric neurologist appointment in Eugene for Shelby. We played many games with paper airplanes as we waited. He was late and we were early! Shelby likes her new doctor. Kathy has some revised information and a new plan to try to prevent future seizures. At McDonald's in Cottage Grove we 'bumped' into two Rogue River neighbors. Small world! No one knew about a rumored Festival of Lights but Shelby saw the billboard as we drove through Roseburg. The hour side trip was impressive, $7, and the beginning of a warning beep that the car was having battery problems. We 'diagnosed' the situation, assured Shelby that we had a plan and a backup plan, shut off the heater and radio and headed home. Kathy's car shows bars (similar to a cell phone) that indicate the battery charge. Our charge increased as we picked up speed so we said a silent prayer and continued our adventure safe and sound.
Good old cell phones! Kathy called me at 2AM asking for use of Mom's car. Sara drove Kathy & Shelby to Grants Pass and they were on the road in a few minutes. We all had overnight bags packed from our trip to Eugene in case Shelia called (the doctor had said any day now). I was hoping to go but it wasn't meant to be. Well, I'm unwinding now and ready to go back to sleep looking forward to welcoming a new member to our wonderful family!

Hi Tom, Wow -- every day exercising? I could have went this morning and didn't -- was lazy instead and it felt good -- tomorrow is another day!
You ARE entitled to your wheelchair ideas. I have no problem hearing them because I’m not sure who is right, what's the best thing to do, push for, accept, etc. anyway. I do like seeing Mom's legs never swollen and she never complains about her knees hurting anymore either. So I gather information, pass it on, gather input, and follow God's directions when I feel like I should -- Of course, the challenge is always is it my will or His will! hugs, Diane

Thank you Diane. Yes, who knows what is the best way to proceed. Appreciate your care and understanding. And especially your validation of my opinions! peace, Tom

I’m not sure of the exact words but it's a typical reaction of dementia patients -- they get very agitated around sundown every day.
I keep forgetting to ask you...... Dec. 21 is A wing Christmas party and potluck. They wanted sign ups this week so I put your name down and home made rolls for the dish to bring. I can easily change it if you want to tell me what to put.
also -- Dad is talking about how much he likes mushrooms. Gooseberries has some good looking portabella mushrooms. I told him I didn't like them and don't know what to do with them so he's saving his mushroom appetite for you!
I'm sorry I will miss you but I’m very glad you're coming to add your special touches and continue the extra care we give up here. luv ya, Diane

rolls are fine but I doubt if they'll be homemade.........
I'll send mushroom info to colleen......she's an expert with regards to portabella mushrooms...... thanks for signing us up for the Christmas party...
I just came home after teaching class....topics ---families and alcohol and then later on abusive relationship.....heavy duty topics tonight.....so now I'm drinking my chamomile tea.....

Oregon Dec 8 : Welcome Audrey Elizabeth at 6 pounds 8 ounces. Forgive me if I heard the name incorrectly! Shelia had the baby naturally and refused all medications. Audrey was having a little difficulty breathing but time should clear that up. I'm looking forward to more details some other day.
I was a sleepy head today and Dad woke me up at 11AM so I'd have time to make the noon Mass (holiday -- Immaculate Conception). He was hoping I was in the mood for eggs since he was too! He had already cooked himself the pancakes since there was leftover batter from a previous day. Church was refreshing with the school kids all dressed in their red sweaters & uniforms. The children's choir sang beautifully.
Dad asked to shopping so away we went.....to pick up Mom's medal necklace that we had engraved with her name (for when it will get lost in Royale Gardens), to Hallmark to buy Peanut (Dad's favorite) anniversary and a few Christmas cards, and then Gooseberries to try out more of their deli selections and do grocery shopping. It was 4pm by time we arrived home! Dad got settled with his squash soup, cranberry sauce, etc. and I went to visit Mom. She was sitting in the TV room with the RN who was dispensing medicines. A few residents were in the hallway. Most were in the dining room but Lindsay and Mick say Mom seems to prefer to be away from the larger crowed sometimes. Lindsay reads Mom's visitor book to her at night and likes it. Mom was served dinner but absolutely not interested in eating anything. She yawned and was tired and thought it was too late for me to be out. She enjoyed hearing about what Dad was doing and said SHE got the house cleaned today so I 'better' not mess it up!
Susan had a two hour visit with Mom yesterday. Amanda (daughter of previous Rogue River police chief, former classmate of Shelia & knows some cousins) was doing Mom's nails. Nail painting was going to be an extra charge at Spring Pointe. At Royale Gardens it free and part of the activities. Amanda is activity director's helper and aka CNA. Mom will start getting a multi-vitamin and B complex vitamin soon.
After visiting Mom, I met Margaret at Heather's home and reviewed/sorted/etc. a pile of papers Margaret's been accumulating on Mom/Medicaid, etc.
Dad went to bed early tonight since he's been up since 8 AM with the plumber. The main toilet now flushes a bit faster and his shower now drains correctly.
Time for me to get organized and relaxed....
Love, prayers, and hugs to all, Diane

Diane, Wanted also to affirm the effective and educational way that you responded to Shelby's anxiety during the trip when there was car trouble. She seems to do very good with explanations. Thanks for the role modeling. Peace, Tom (p.s. Diane followed Kathy’s lead on talking with Shelby)

Questions: Any ideas for Christmas gifts for Mom or Dad????? What time is party on the 21st???? (Dave arrives that day at 12:20) How's the temperature? When you get up at 8 in the morning and Dad sleeps until 11:00, can you put the heat on or does the house stay cold until he wakes up??? I'm trying to figure out what clothes to bring.
thanks for info..... love, Mary
more questions??? Does Mom have a nursing home address for us to send cards to?? Might she enjoy receiving mail there now and then?
Please ask Dad if he would like any bread from Great Harvest (he usually asks me to get cranberry walnut bread). Also, ask him if he would like some of my apple carrot muffins (last time he didn't seem to eat them that much....so if he does not want them, I won't make them, if he wants them, I'll make them here in ABQ)....thanks for gathering this info....

Dad asked me to copy all the sayings on a poster hanging in a Royale Garden guest bathroom. Please find it and give it to him as a present!! It's titled “God's Little Instructions” -- has a saying -- then a bible quote -- over and over. Dad would probably like one for the house and maybe one for Mom's room. She liked reading from the Catholic daily reader yesterday. Even if Mom didn't get the sayings anymore it would decorate her room and be good for visitors to read it.......
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.....
Will find out the 21st party time later today.....
Temperature outside ranged from 35 to 50 since I’ve been here.... there's extra hats, gloves and scarves in guest bedroom, second drawer on left..... gathered all of Mom's together and am using 'em. Feel free to use sweaters, etc. hanging in closet that I leave behind for future trips....some were Mom's, some Margaret’s, etc....
The house stays cold until Dad wakes up. I usually turn the little room heater on and don't use the computer in the morning.... I usually just go exercise, grocery shop, sleep in, visit Mom, etc. I never asked Dad if I could turn the house heater on 'cause I remember him complaining to Mom that it woke him up since the heater vibrates the wall/floor by his bed. or the noise bothered him. I'm a morning person so usually have a list of stuff to do and get back between 11 and 12 to fix Dad breakfast every other day..... pancakes & eggs are every other day. Of course he's willing to do his oatmeal blender stuff more often but he enjoys the pancakes & eggs when I just 'happen' to be there.

Oregon Dec 9 & 10 "Saturday....
Started out the morning with a brisk walk around the school track while chatting with Aunt Edie (how did you keep visiting Uncle Eddie every day?), Aunt Mary and my dear friend Gail. I love free cell phone minutes on the weekend!
Jon came over and resolved my frustrating, time consuming computer problem of not being able to access the internet for the last 1 1/2 days. I blamed it on MacAfee anti-virus that I had just installed but the problem (and friendly solution) was with EarthLink’s accelerator setting....which I had updated a few days before.....but it worked fine after the update......so settings are sensitive....just like me!
Today plans are to find my notes from yesterday (found them!), teach Dad how to type and email on the computer (letters to editor for Wall Street Journal and USA Today -- already added to email address book). Dad learned how to copy already this morning. P.S. Dad learned how to save a file and started typing. Then he suggested we swap jobs -- I typed and he washed dishes. Emailing is too complicated today so we printed out his letter and he used snail mail.
I'll be taking Mom to listen to the Sunshine Band in the Parlor at 4pm today......no I didn't since the Sunshine Band is scheduled for next week, not today. I'm losing track of time! Mom was napping in her bed today as were most other residents. Tall Crystal CNA said many seemed tired today. Mom seemed very content laying in bed saying how tired she was since she had so much company and did a lot of cooking. I laid down on the mat next to her and she constantly asked questions even when I pretended to be sleeping. She put her hand out and patted me. She told me Edie and Eddie were coming to visit her. Two minutes later she asked if I knew that Uncle Eddie had died. The alarm on her bed goes off often since she sleeps on the edge. I covered it with my coat to muffle the noise and learned how to shut it off. I called Bill to say hi and she finally fell asleep. Five minutes later (an hour after I was there), it was time to get up! Crystal is the most patient with Mom when transferring Mom from bed to potty to wheelchair. Crystal used a lift belt (?) but expected Mom to cooperate and waited until Mom worst fears were not so sharp. Mick came in to assist and Mom perked up saying 'here comes my boyfriend'. Mick is 18 years old and smiles easily.
Dinner menu looked appealing so I decided to eat with Mom in the dining room. We arrived around 5:10pm, told the counter person that Agnes Glennon from A15 would be eating in the dining room so they pulled her card and didn't send her meal to the A wing. Someone came around offering bibs and taking orders (VERY limited choices). It's only $3.50 if you want a tray also. It was suggested that we sit at the rectangle table in the middle of the first row. Most other tables have 'regulars' that get upset when their routine is disturbed. In the second dining room, we visited with some people Mom recognized, got a cup a tea from the second dining room (help yourself -- cups below microwave, teabags above microwave). Mom was agitated when she saw how dark it was outside. The A wing closes all the curtains at night. Mom was adamant that she would NOT be in the dining room by herself -- too many strangers around and she wasn't the friendly type. We played dominos -- or just moved them around -- while waiting to be served. She ate about six spoons of chicken noodle soup, four string beans, a dollop of whip cream, & drank the juice. We called Danny and Mom told him what a lovely dining room it was and the food was free! Tom mentioned Mom loved the roast beef sandwich from a house/restaurant across form RR shopping area -- 'tis a new thought to bring tempting food in for her. The table nearby had about six family members with LOTS of outside food.
Mom receives mail and carries it around with her for awhile. Send her cards/notes to Agnes Glennon, c/o Royale Gardens, 2075 N.W. Highland, Grants Pass, OR 97526. Want to hear her voice? Call 541-476-8891 and ask for Agnes Glennon on the A wing (room A15). We haven't tried it yet but that's the procedure.

Friday info --
Know someone in the Grants Pass area looking for a job? Applications are being accepted at Northwest Club for a maintenance person. Job is not physically demanding. The woman is retiring. Says she just looks around to see what needs to be done and makes sure her crew does it.
Found another way to get to Royale Gardens -- from the Northwest club -- following the road that parallels the freeway to Highland Ave. Mom was napping in her wheelchair so I did other business. Robin was feeding the two parakeets and talked about future plans to set up a bi-weekly tea with Mom and two talkative ladies on G wing.
Spent time with bookkeeper Marcela:
1. Gave our family liability payment for December.
2. Added all other siblings (after calling Susan for authorization since she had power of attorney according to their records) information so we all have a voice at Royale Gardens. Marked Margaret as having power of attorney.
3. Need to check with Bonnie, Medicaid case worker, since Mom's December Medicaid card is missing. In future, card can be mailed to Royale Gardens address with Margaret's name on it. Otherwise a copy needs to be given to them every month.
4. We get keep $30 of Mom's social security check monthly to spend on her. Margaret needs to report quarterly how we spend it with receipts to prove it. Some ideas: clothes, fleece blankets, soda, special shampoo, Christmas presents, birthday presents, bring food in for Mom, beauty shop, take wheel chair van trips. I had Mom's name engraved on the back of her Mary necklace -- would have been perfect IF I had saved the receipt.
SO -- if you buy anything for Mom, save the receipt and give to Margaret!
5. Beauty shop is cheap -- $7 haircut, $9 shampoo & set. ANYONE can use the facilities or buy hair products there. Most workers buy their shampoos, etc...since almost at cost and cheapest in town.
6. A few days ago -- Royale Gardens will pick Mom's prescription plan since Medicaid will pay for it either way and Royale Gardens will pick only those plans that coordinate with their pharmacy.
I stopped at Ray's (formerly Market of Choice grocery store) on the way home and then ate breakfast with Dad.
Went back to visit with Mom and I forget the details but it was a rough visit. Sometimes my stubbornness of trying to make things better (fix it!) just makes the situation worse. Redirecting Mom's attention wasn't working. She was focused on the negative no matter what. I finally gave up and left. (let go and let God -- what a concept!)
Going back to the gym for a swim and shower was very refreshing!

I'm glad Jeremy was able to do that! As you probably know, Margaret asked for all the lyrics to songs that Grandma likes to sing. Margaret said that Grandma will start singing, but then forget some of the words.

Diane, great talking with you. Thanks for the call. And the visitors book(sign in) is a great idea. Since we focus on mother's strengths... She can read, look, watch, talk, and be charming. e.g. she has an 18 year old boyfriend! Thanks for taking care of yourself...with swim etc. Easy does it. Tom
From: Mary
Thanks for all the info.......glad that you take time for exercise etc......caretaking can be physically and emotionally draining......especially when there are so many factors that we cannot control........
Thanks for being my messenger with Dad. Please tell him that there should be a package in the mail at the end of the week from “all posters”. Tell him not to open it.....to just put it on my bed.
Thanks. God bless you for all the love that you are sharing with the folks. love, Mary

Stories from Uncle Gene on the phone today.
1. We were poor. Nanny had to rely on the Salvation Army when Pops(her hubby, our Grandpa) was sick... Nanny always said that the Salvation Army was very good to them.
2. Aunt Edie having difficulty with writing Christmas cards. She cries when she signs just the one name. It used to be that she wrote all the cards ....and Uncle Ed would lick the envelopes and put on the stamps. So, Uncle Gene suggested that she not send any cards this year.
3. Aunt Edie's two grandchildren from Florida will come to New York for the holidays ....Amanda and Geoffrey. They will keep her company. Uncle Gene also invited her to Boston.

Oregon Dec 11
The days are going quickly...... Today consist of:
Fast run to store for yogurt to make pancakes, church, make smoothie for Dad, Christmas party with Mom, get more guest passes at Northwest Club (currently members MUST buy the guest passes. In the future, Dad can call Joyce and send one of us down with a note from him. Kathy, at the desk, asked how son Tom was.), dinner at Sizzler, another smoothie for Dad, make phone calls, went to a meeting, read paper with Dad, order new checks for Dad, add to Mary's list of things to do, and now email. Dad got some exercise walking the Royale Garden parking lot, I walked Sizzler's parking lot while Dad finished eating.
Dad and I found Mom in A wing's dining room. Her face lit up when she saw Dad walking in the door. Mom grabbed his hand and started introducing him to everyone as we walked the hall. The nurse took Mom in to go potty before the party while Dad and I tried the VCR in the TV room. I still can't get it to work...guess Jason (Robin's coworker) hasn't worked on it yet. Dad said Mom doesn't look good and he doesn't think she'll last long. He sounded sad. I agreed that she's been going downhill and mumbled something or other. Attached is picture! We could hear Mom screeching in the other room as she was lifted from the wheelchair to potty.....and then back again. I told Dad she just won't trust anyone and doesn't want to be picked up. Someone’s alarm went off so I went to take over Mom but she was all done, smiling, and ready to go. I took pictures of Mom & Dad in front of Mom's bulletin board but can't download those on this computer. (will make copies at Wal-Mart for Mom).
The Pacemakers were singing Christmas Carols in the front visiting area. We sat behind the bird cage and Mom constantly asked questions between me and Dad. We bounced off each other quite well -- tell Mom to listen, we'll answer your questions later, you just went to the potty, you have a special pad on so can pee in your pants, Dr. Selinger says you have to stay here until your knees are better (sometimes I add...or you die whichever comes first), sshhh we should listen. Mom pointed and waved to people across the hall. The heat got to Dad and he went to the restroom. When he came out, everyone was scattering to the next event (fiddlers in the dining room), he was walking very hesitantly, so I hollered “Dad” across the room and he waited until I guided him back to Mom. He said he was confused which way to go. He went outside for some fresh air while Mom & I got some desert and listened to the fiddlers. Mom was surprised (again) to realize that she was in a nursing home. She said -- something must really be wrong with me. I say -- yes your knees and your memory. I asked her what she wanted for Christmas. “My man” was her answer. I laughed and said it would be hard to wrap him up. Mom was greeted by a few people walking by and Mom talked to two other ladies in wheelchairs as we walked the hallway. Everything was crowded and festive. Mom is starting to call Royale Gardens 'my home'....of course she thinks Dad should come live at her home now.
I was bringing Mom back and someone told us that Santa's line was very small now. Dad came back in and we all had a picture taken with Santa (attached). Dad went to the 'bathroom' instead of saying goodbye while I took Mom back to A wing, stayed a few minutes, left her in the hallway (her back to door so she doesn't see me walking away) with fellow residents -- but she knew I was leaving, hollered “Diane, where are you?”. I hollered back -- “We'll see you tomorrow” and kept walking. Some days are easier then others.
Dad and I are planning on returning tomorrow since it's their 57 wedding anniversary. Mom says she knew that. Dad got her a funny Peanut’s card, some chocolate, and something else. He's looking forward to bringing Jeremy’s great present -- a three ring binder with the words of many, many songs that Mom & Dad love to sing.

Grandpa is planning on Jon getting involved on installing charter DSL -- dilemma -- I think you need the cable TV connection??? so putting Danny's table in corner by dining room table leaves no cable nearby -- that's were we put the table last night and then realized the phone and TV connection are on the other side of the room. Maybe a wireless connection?????? Jon was talking about it.... I didn't mention the wireless to Dad. But we did talk about possibilities of rearranging the living room. The maroon recliner to the right of the TV can be moved/got rid of per Dad. Then move TV to the right, put in Danny's table, move telephone to the left.... need to see how it fits in the future. Will call Jon's cell phone some time today.

Jon is in Ashland all day today----i think it will be easier than we think--my computer is in a bedroom--the main TV connection is in the living room--just need an outlet in place where installing it--will find out how hard that is too do---
Much later: We just let Charter install it!

more jobs
1. Christmas presents for A wing workers, etc..... 3 round tins of Danish shortbread cookies on dining room table -- have no idea who to give to, etc.
2. Does Mom get her cassette player turned on every night as she's going to sleep? Does she need another cassette?
3. I still have not played a VCR tape for her. I carry the 50th anniversary & America the beautiful with me for a possible distraction....can't figure out the VCR yet ... Jason (Robin's co-worker was supposed to check it out but it's been a busy season....or I just don't get it)
4. Mom still needs to see Jeremy’s great words of song book....and get Mom & Dad to use it! Should be fun!
5. Three ant traps will be left in the bathroom. Two under the rug by the vent, one by bathtub corner (nearest door)...they are beige and blend into surrounding color well. Three new traps are still in package under sink. The ants don't seem to be dying off. Two plastic bags of borax & sugar are on the sink counter. At least the ants are only in Mom's bathroom....so far.
6. FYI only: (no work to do, yippee!) Toilet handle flushes fine without holding down for a long time now. Dad's shower and the kitchen sink drain quickly.
7. Dad had dryer guy in tonight (Mike's father used to work on the same dryer!). Bottom belt slipped off. Info for possible new dryer is on bulletin board -- Dad said maybe sometime in January.
8. Mom's bulletin board needs more tacks. They're in guest bedroom dresser -- top right hand drawer.
9. Mom's glasses are broken -- in same top drawer. Nurse told Helen that glasses, teeth and hearing aids get broken and lost continually. If not needed, may not be worth fixing.
10. Bring Mom the blue crochet blanket from her car? If yes, make sure they mark her name so she'll get it back most of the time.
11. Dad has his grab bag present ready for you to wrap. He assumed Mom didn't have a name.
12. Find a table like Danny's for Dad's stereos (Margaret was going to look in Joel's leftover furniture.)
13. Computer -- every time you reboot (while using EarthLink anyway!) -- and want to use the internet ...
a. click EARTHLINK TOTAL ACCESS
b. click CONNECT
c. after EarthLink toolbar appears on top of screen and internet explorer opens but without a webpage, click TOOLBOX in EarthLink toolbar (top and center of screen)
d. click EARTHLINK ACCELERATOR
e. click ACCELERATION OPTIONS
f. click the ADVANCED tab
g. click the circle to the left of ACCELERATE ALL CONNECTIONS
h. click APPLY
I. click OK
j. close the window
k. go back to Internet Explorer window and you'll be able to get web pages now. It's been simpler (really) to do this for a few days then find out how to fix it.....
14. I applied for MacAfee refund....check Dad's email for response (in case I don't get to it in the AM).
IF I think of any more 'jobs', I am NOT telling you!

Oregon Dec 12 & 13, 2005
I can't believe I'm going home tomorrow already! Time goes so swiftly I don't know if I remember what I did yesterday. I do know that I took a day off from visiting Mom but Robin and Helen both visited her. I ran a bunch of errands, took time for me and enjoyed visiting with Kathy and Susan at Kathy's last night. Had a lively discussion on what colors match -- easy to tell who watches the decorating TV channels and who are the conservative decorators!
Today started with an acupuncture treatment with my dear friend Ravin. She'll be a provider on Blue Cross and Health Net in Jan. & Feb. so business should continue growing well. After that rejuvenation, I accompanied Mom and ten other Royale Garden residents on a Wal-Mart shopping tour. Mom was excited and scared about going. She was the fourth to go up on the wheelchair lift and her face lit up with a big smile and she said 'weeeeeee'. It was precious. As we drove through Grants Pass, she asked me if I looked on this block for my new house. Shopping was mostly an up experience because it was fairly easy to distract her to help me look for handkerchiefs, a grab bag present, etc. We ate lunch at McDonalds (in Wal-Mart) and were joined by Susan between appointments. I treasured the great company and short break. The last hour was a bit rough but we sat in the corner of McDonalds because the bigness (is that a word?) of super center Wal-Mart and all the people became too much for Mom to handle. I made believe I was taking a nap to take a break from the questions. Once Mom asked “what can I do?”. I answered “pray”. So we did -- about three hail Mary's and Our Father before she said that's enough. I stayed with Mom in her room for about an hour. We went through her visitor log, relaxed, unpacked, etc. Mom was getting mad at noisy Peggy (who hollers help, help) so hollered 'shut up'. Her roommate imitated Mom and hollered shut up also. Mom responded 'shut up yourself, you don't belong in here' -- thinking she was talking to Peggy who was hanging out in the doorway. It was cute -- sounded like a bunch of little kids. I pushed Peggy down the hall and gave her a hug. The helpers came to help Mom go potty (didn't the whole time we were on the trip) and let her take a nap. I had my bags staged in the hallway and left as they were helping her.
Did some banking and grocery shopping for Dad on the way home. Took a nap. Spent two hours cleaning out the refrigerator, cooking dinner, preparing new ground veggies, etc. The phone rang four different times and the repairman came to fix Dad's antique dryer. I went to Fred Myers for the last of the grocery shopping (fish).....now have caught up on destroying notes, emailing......
will pack tomorrow AM, exercise and leave on noon flight ....God willing.....
will get home in time to take my dear hubby out for his birthday meal........peace, love, hugs, acceptance, and prayers for all of us!

some thoughts......
Hi, Thanks Diane for all the ways that you have loved and cared for Grandma and Grandpa. The good Lord says, “Well done, my faithful servant.”
....jobs..... I want to add a few things to my job list.
1. Take time to enjoy the Christmas Holidays
2. Take time to enjoy all the relatives
3. Take time to make a job list that is longer than mine for whoever comes up to Oregon next.
4. Warn Carol about going to Oregon after Diane. Let her know what she might be in for with regards to jobs and jobs and jobs.
5. Try to talk Colleen into going to Oregon again in the future when she might be able to have some R & R. Her visit this time will be filled with work and work and work.
Ah, the joys of life and caretaking. Tis my pleasure and honor, Diane, to continue the love and caring of the folks. I will prioritize the jobs like I assume you did (toilet working properly was probably at the top of your list!).
Enjoy the birthday celebration with your hubby. Then, put your feet up for a while and rest and relax and rest and relax and then enjoy a Merry Christmas!

What's Jeremy's email address? He sent Grandpa a cool notebook with words of their type of songs. hugs, Diane
From: David Pepper
I'm glad Jeremy was able to do that! As you probably know, Margaret asked for all the lyrics to songs that Grandma likes to sing. Margaret said that Grandma will start singing, but then forget some of the words.
From: Margaret Great picture of you guys with Santa--mom's face looks very drawn---
glad Jeremy did the book for mom--that job was originally given to me by grandpa---and i felt overwhelmed --so i asked Mary/David to do it and i see she passed it down the line--sooo glad it is done and made several hearts happy!

Re: Oregon Dec 9 & 10

From: Margaret

Then, put your feet up for a while and rest and relax and rest and relax and then enjoy a Merry Christmas!
love, Mary
